Some Questions To Ask about Justification.
PLUS – Scriptures That Destroy UOJ.
Send In Your Ideas and They Will Be Added

Here is some background about Justification.

People solemnly say, “OJ protects the doctrine of Justification.”
Oh? How does an invented dogma – OJ – protect the Gospel? When did the Gospel need protection? A mighty shield and weapon or something weak that needs protecting?

Here are questions to ask:

  1. What is the Chief Article of Christianity? Where is this language found?
  2. Do you believe that God forgave the sins of the entire world? If so, when did that happen – at the death of Christ, His resurrection, or another time, such as the angelic announcement – Peace on earth? Where is this written?
  3. What does Objective Justification mean? It is not in the Bible or the Book of Concord.
  4. What does Subjective Justification mean? I have not found it in the Bible or the Book of Concord.
  5. What did our early catechisms teach?
  6. How did anyone teach Justification without OJ and SJ – and then only after the era of Pietism and rationalism at Halle University?
  7. Why should we teach what ELCA teaches – that the entire world is already saved?
  8. Why are we using the NIV, which has changed Paul’s words about Justification in Romans 3?
  9. If Abraham is the example of Justification by Faith in Genesis 15, Romans 4, and Galatians, then who is our example of Justification without Faith?
  10. If Paul teaches OJ – as you claim – why does he clearly teach Justification by Faith? Does he contradict himself, because some of your leaders really hate Justification by Faith.
  11. The Gospel is the God-power unto salvation for everyone who believes in Romans 1:16, so how is everyone saved as DP Buchholz claims?
  12. I always heard “raised for our justification!” Romans 4:25, but then I read Romans 4:24 – if we believe… Who is mixed up?
  13. Romans 5 begins with Justification by Faith. Did Paul switch to OJ in the same chapter?
  14. The Means of Grace chapter, Romans 10, is clear about faith and forgiveness. Was Paul confused about this? Or are we?
  15. Is a seminary president from Canada more authoritative than Luther?
  16. If the Book of Concord says we should study Luther’s Galatians Lectures, to learn more about Justification by Faith, why are we ignoring that book – and Luther – this anniversary year?
  17. Why do the liberal Lutherans and the conservative Lutherans hate Luther so much? But they still sell Luther trinkets and toys?
  18. Which is better – the original Small Catechism or the latest version and notes from our synod?

Scriptures That Destroy Universal Objective Justification, Root and Branch

Genesis 15:6 King James Version (KJV)

And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Mark 16:16 King James Version (KJV)

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (GJ – Another reason to adopt the NIV – it kicks this verse into the footnotes.)

John 3:16 King James Version (KJV)

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:36 King James Version (KJV)

36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (GJ -Does Jon-Boy know?)

John 6:27 King James Version
Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Romans 1:16 King James Version (KJV)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (GJ – Don’t tell Jay or Pope John the Malefactor.)

Romans 3:21-22 King James Version (KJV)

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Romans 4:24-25 King James Version (KJV)

24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans 5:1-2 King James Version (KJV)

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 10:1-17 King James Version (KJV)

10 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Galatians 3:6-7 King James Version (KJV)

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Otten’s Christian News Copies Ichabod Article – No URL or Date –
Lest Someone Find the Post And Start Reading Ichabod

UOJ advocates – why do they identify with such nonsense that they go bonkers when someone prefers the Bible and the Book of Concord to Rambach,
Stephan, Webber, Scaer, and Valleskey
?

The August 6, 2018 issue of Christian News copied from this blog, without giving the date or the URL.

My article is dated July 25, 2018 – Learn some APA format, Editor Otten and Disciple Becker.

The title is – Watch the Magic as UOJ Wizards Switch from the Chief Article to Rationalistic Pietism

For your convenience and for Search Engine Optimization – I am copying the article below –

Magic acts are a lot of fun. We all know that the magician distracts our eyes so that he can quickly do the trick where we are not looking.

The UOJ Magicians work the same way, but they are nasty and vindictive, not entertaining. Their energy comes from their hatred of the Word, which they cloak with fine words and sanctimony.

LCMS and WELS – Same History – Same Tricks
Missouri and WELS came from Pietism, which has a way of asserting itself again. The clergy who would rather be unionistic, because they love every doctrine but their own, bitterly resent the chains and shackles – as they see them – of the Book of Concord so they throw off those horrid Confessions.

Missouri and WELS both taught Justification by Faith for many decades.

JFBA Examples in WELS:

  1. Gausewitz was the catechism and no one talked of UOJ. The instigator of Kokomo never heard of UOJ before seminary.
  2. Some oldsters in WELS remember that they were taught Justification by Faith in the olden days, because they were.
  3. JP Meyer and other false teachers worked to supplant the Confessions and the Chief Article, so WELS clergy ignore and loathe the Book of Concord.
  4. Ex-District VP Paul Kuske objected to UOJ a few years ago and only got his emeritus statrus revoked by DP Seifert. How cruel! How savage! How typically two-faced of WELS!
JFBA Examples in the LCMS:
  1. The 1905 German catechism of the synod taught Justification by Faith, not UOJ.
  2. They also used the Gausewitz Catechism, because he was the president of the Synodical Conference.
  3. The KJV catechism, lately in the CPH catalogue, teaches Justification by Faith – not UOJ.
  4. Dr. Walter A. Maier preached Justification by Faith and taught it as the foundational doctrine of Christianity, named before inerrancy in one quotation. See the graphic. He was praised by sister synods, not denounced as a false teacher.
The Magic Wand of Verbal Abuse

The UOJ Magicians have only one trick. They verbally abuse anyone who threatens their position, and they scare easily. They mask their fear with fake ferocity, always using their buddies to back them up, like shills in an audience helping with a mind-reading trick.

Robert believed in due process.  He repeatedly said that he would not be used to deny due process to Walter A. Maier.  He also expressed his opinion that his efforts to bring Maier to an orthodox formulation (sic) of this doctrine with the help of such eminent theologians as Dr. Harry Huth, the great Missouri Synod Confessions scholar, would bear more fruit than his brother’s approach.

WAM II, left, got the Preus “due process” treatment.
I do not have his academic achievements at this time.
He is with a bunch of Maiers. When I met WAM II, he was jolly and friendly.

Otten – ed. L-r: Walter Maier II, Paul Maier, David Maier,
Walter Maier III.

Imagine yourself as a professor at the synod’s seminary, the son of the world-famous preacher and Biblical scholar, Walter A. Maier, PhD, Harvard, who taught Justification by Faith and inerrancy.
  • Jack Preus, the LCMS president, sends a letter to every congregation, denouncing you as a false teacher – for teaching what built The Lutheran Hour, your father preaching on the radio. But the accusation is dishonest, because it does not say, “You teach the Chief Article and we reject that, agreeing with the rationalistic Pietists.” No, it is “YOU deny our precious dogma doctrine of Justification without Faith Objective Justification.”
  • Robert Preus, Jack’s brother, as president of the Ft. Wayne seminary, denounces you to the entire LCMS, using the most ridiculous arguments for UOJ, even citing the UOJist who left teaching in the LCMS to be a Roman Catholic editor! That was Edward Preuss of precious memory, still quoted with a school-girl’s sigh.
  • Instead of being the leading candidate for LCMS synod president, a big effort is mounted to deny you any votes because (wave the magic wands) both Preus brothers have unethically and illegally denounced you as a false teacher. And yes, that is indeed slander.
  • Ralph Bohlmann becomes the LCMS president, promotes Church Growth, and sees his daughter ordained as a UCC pastor and married to another woman.
  • Herman Otten, a supposed Maier friend, backs UOJ to the hilt, essentially agreeing with the Preus brothers. It took another magician, Paul Rodham McCain, to equal this level of hypocrisy and back-stabbing. Otten sells books against Luther, praises a Roman Catholic author for publishing the obvious, and specializes in promoting the thralls of UOJ.
The irony of this Preus team is that neither Preus brother earned an Ivy league degree or engaged in Biblical scholarship, as Walter A. Maier, WAM II, and WAM III did. Jack and Bob both studied Latin scholasticism at the University of Minnesota – the Icey League. Academic achievement in the Preus family stopped there. As The Right Reverend Bishop James Heiser said to me, “The Preus children are not known for their theological acumen.”
The Preus brothers used the weakness of CFW Walther’s education to their advantage, calling up the ghost of Stephan’s thrall to pound WAM II into the ground. The weakness of LCMS clergy and laity always comes through when they line up like iron filings around the magnetic personality of their first pope, professor, publisher, and political expert, CFW Walther, BA.
The answer does not come from inane theses that beg the question, like Valleskey on Fuller and Church Growth. The answer comes from careful study of the Biblical text. Anyone can do that, but few take the trouble.
I am happy to say that the younger generations of men are willing to address what the Boomer men ignored.
According to this former editor of Steadfast Lutherans,
Dr. Maier was “a moron” for teaching Justification by Faith.

Some Areas To Study for Those Who Do Not Know the Influence of Halle Pietism on American Lutherans

Spener inspired the creation of Halle University, a Biblical Pietism that rejected the Confessions and clearly borrowed from Calvinism. A link to even more about Pietism can be found here.
As a student, Muhlenberg came under the influence of the Pietist movement through fellow students from Einbeck who had worked at the Francke Foundations in Halle (Saale), an important Pietist institution. With two other men, Muhlenberg started a charity school in Göttingen that eventually became an orphanage.[1]

  2. Muhlenberg, the founder of the LCA, and
  3. Adolph Hoenecke, the dogmatician of WELS
The University of Halle (Universität Halle) was founded in 1694 by Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg, who became Frederick IKing in Prussia, in 1701.
In the late 17th century and early 18th century, Halle became a centre for Pietism within Prussia.

Leucorea Foundation, Wittenberg.

University of Halle in 1836.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the universities were centers of the German EnlightenmentChristian Wolff was an important proponent of rationalism. He influenced many German scholars, such as Immanuel KantChristian Thomasius was at the same time the first philosopher in Germany to hold his lectures not in Latin, but German. He contributed to a rational programme in philosophy but also tried to establish a more common-sense point of view, which was aimed against the unquestioned superiority of aristocracy and theology.
The institutionalisation of the local language (German) as the language of instruction, the prioritisation of rationalism over religious orthodoxy, new modes of teaching, and the ceding of control over their work to the professors themselves, were among various innovations which characterised the University of Halle, and have led to its being referred to as the first “modern” university, whose liberalism was adopted by the University of Göttingen about a generation later, and subsequently by other German and then most North American universities.[3]
Biblical criticism began as an aspect of the rise of modern culture in the West. Some scholars claim that its roots reach back to the Reformation, but most agree it grew out of the German Enlightenment. German pietismplayed a role in its development, as did British deism, with its greatest influences being rationalism and Protestant scholarship. The Enlightenment age and its skepticism of biblical and ecclesiastical authority ignited questions concerning the historical basis for the man Jesus separately from traditional theological views concerning him. This “quest” for the Jesus of history began in biblical criticism’s earliest stages, reappeared in the nineteenth century, and again in the twentieth, remaining a major occupation of biblical criticism, on and off, for over 200 years.
Born in Breslau in the Prussian Silesia as the grandson of Daniel Schleiermacher, a pastor at one time associated with the Zionites,[12][13] and the son of Gottlieb Schleiermacher, a Reformed Church chaplain in the Prussian army, Schleiermacher started his formal education in a Moravian school at Niesky in Upper Lusatia, and at Barby near Magdeburg. However, pietistic Moravian theology failed to satisfy his increasing doubts, and his father reluctantly gave him permission to enter the University of Halle, which had already abandoned pietism and adopted the rationalist spirit of Christian Wolff and Johann Salomo Semler.

Schleiermacher’s Professorship[edit]

In 1804, Schleiermacher moved as university preacher and professor of theology to the University of Halle, where he remained until 1807, quickly obtaining a reputation as professor and preacher; he exercised a powerful influence in spite of contradictory charges which accused him of atheism, Spinozism and pietism. In this period, he began his lectures on hermeneutics (1805–1833) and he also wrote his dialogue the Weihnachtsfeier (Christmas Eve: Dialogue on the Incarnation, 1806), which represents a midway point between his Speeches and his great dogmatic work, Der christliche Glaube (The Christian Faith); the speeches represent phases of his growing appreciation of Christianity as well as the conflicting elements of the theology of the period. After the Battle of Jena he returned to Berlin (1807), was soon appointed pastor of the Trinity Church, and on May 18, 1809 he married Henriette von Willich (née von Mühlenfels) (1788–1840), the widow of his friend Johann Ehrenfried Theodor von Willich (1777–1807).
At the foundation of the University of Berlin (1810), in which he took a prominent part, Schleiermacher obtained a theological chair, and soon became secretary to the Prussian Academy of Sciences. He took a prominent part in the reorganization of the Prussian church, and became the most powerful advocate of the union of the Lutheran and Reformed divisions of German Protestantism, paving the way for the Prussian Union of Churches (1817).
Rambach was born in Halle and a true Pietist. “In 1723 he was appointed adjunct of the Theological Faculty at Halle, as also inspector of the Orphanage; in 1726 extraordinary professor of theology; and in 1727, after A. H. Francke’s death, ordinary professor as well as preacher at the Schulkirche.” Hymnary.org
Biblical Criticism – Halle Professors on the List

The Higher Critics: An Annotated Chronology, 1710-1917

Ray Dyer, PhD

1710. Halle, Germany. A Bible group begins distribution of low-cost Bibles to the poor (1804). University of Halle founded as Lutheran foundation 1694, “the first modern university”. Had renounced religious orthodoxy in favour of objective-rational science and investigation. Canonical texts were replaced by systematic lectures, and German replaced Latin as language of instruction.

1752. Semler (1775) becomes Professor of Theology at Halle (1710).

1776. Johan Jakob Griesbach (1745-1812), Professor first at Halle and then at Jena 1775, was first to challenge “Received Text” of Gospels (1831 Lachmann). He coined the term “synoptic” for the first three gospels. Epochal textual critic. Synopsis of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, 1774-76. The “Griesbach hypothesis,” gave priority to Matthew, was accepted by Strauss, Baur, and many other scholars through early Victorian years (1832). Cf. “Marcan hypothesis” (1831 ibid) (1838 1850). QHJ: Chap. X.

Scheiermacher taught Objective Justification alone – he was a Universalist.

1799. Friedrich Schleirmacher (1768-1834). the “Father of Modern Theology,” emphasized historical examination of the origins of Christianity. He taught at Halle until 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars, at which point the liberal torch passed to Gottingen. He held the position of Professor of Theology at Berlin from 1810. He addressed Speeches on Religion to its “cultured despisers”. He was the first to lecture on “The Life of Jesus” beginning in 1819 . He employed rational methods in the service of theological aims (sic).
August Tholuck – He is quoted as avocating Universalism.

1837. August Tholuck (1799-1877), Professor of Theology at Halle (1826-77), was an exponent of “mediating theology” and an early critic of Strauss, appealing to Animal Magnetism as mediating means to preserving belief in supernaturalism and miracles, as would Hase by 1876 and perhaps Nippold later. GJ – Tholuck was Adolph Hoenecke’s mentor at Halle.

1857. C.K.J. “Chevalier” Bunsen (1791-1860) employed the Universal History of Egypt. Part V as his basis for challenging the “short chronology” of the Bible (Bibelwerke fur die Gemeinde (Bible Works for the Municipality), Vol. IX, Das Leben Jesu (The Life of Jesus), edited by the authoritative H. J. Holtzmann.

1884. Friedrich Emil Kautzsch (1841-1910) was Lecturer at Leipzig from 1869 and from 1872 Professor of Theology at Basle, where he knew Nietzsche. He also taught at Tubingen from 1880 and Halle from 1888. Kautzsch was a textual and linguistic specialist in Grammars of Biblical Aramaic. Grammatik des Biblisch-Aramaisch. He was a founder member of the German Society for Exploration of Palestine, and editor of Theologische Studien und Kritiker, 1888- . Cf. Dalman.

1885. Willibald J.H. Beyschlag (1823-1900), Professor of New Testament Exegesis at Halle from 1860m was the liberal-Protestant author of Das Leben Jesu (The Life of Jesus), 2 vols. (1885-86). The excellently arranged preliminary study and scholarly apparatus of the first volume is then followed by a disencumbered life in the second. Beyschlag insists on merging the Synoptics and John, and on retaining the eschatology with the spiritual, against Volkmar. Many inconsistencies are thereby noted by Schweitzer. Beyschlag attempts to resolve the problems by postulating three stages in the development of Jesus: (1) Preacher of a future and supernatural Kingdom. (2) Growing belief that the Kingdom was then presenting itself, as seen in the changes brought about in the people who flocked to Him in the middle part of the Public Life. (3) As failure began to mark the scene, thought shifted to “beyond the grave” and a “glorious return” (QHJ: 215-16).

1892. M. Kahler (1835-1912), Professor of Theology at Halle from 1862, who opposed liberal life of Jesus studies, was a proponent of the “Faith versus History” debate. In The So-Called Historical Jesus and the Historical Biblical Christ (2nd ed. 1896; English translation 1964 he argued that Christianity was only interested in the latter – “The real Christ is the preached Christ” – foreshadowing the theology of Karl Barth and R. Bultmann in the 1920s, and modern studies of the Apostle Paul, the Kerygmatic Christ, and the beginning of a “New Quest”.
Let’s Not Forget the Halle Professor Who Inspired the OJ/SJ Explanation by His Calvinist Translator

Some consider Barth the ultimate non-confessional Pietist, though he claimed to loathe Pietism.

Scaer – Refuted. Hale – Refuted. Walther – Refuted. Stephan – Refuted. Calvin – Refuted. Adventists – Refuted.

Romans 4 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on Him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Chapter 5 – I John
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

List of Hyles Related Clergy Sex Abuse Cases « Blog on the Way

List of Hyles Related Clergy Sex Abuse Cases « Blog on the Way:

List of Hyles Related Clergy Sex Abuse Cases

I have been documenting clergy abuse of children cases in Christian Fundamentalism since 2001. And, obviously, the sins and crimes of First Baptist of Hammond and Hyles-Anderson graduates make up a huge percentage of that list. That list, by the way, runs down the right side of my blog front page. Just go here:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/.
I include any pastor or church officer from a Fundamentalist church. Most of these are IFB, but the list also includes the Free Presbyterian Church and some Bible churches, all of whom designate themselves as Christian Fundamentalist.

Just a year ago, I was harassed and vilified in public for continuing to document and post accounts of Hyles-Anderson graduates who were molesting kids. ,I was accused of being a traitor to the victims of clergy sex abuse: a rat, a snake, and a mole, and a secret agent for Bob Jones University. A lot of pressure was put on me to stop doing my comprehensive documentation and to focus on only one case, or one type of case, those cases that come from BJU grads. Some people just wanted me to go away altogether. Of course, as a person with a conscience, I did not knuckle under to bullies. I’m a grown up, and I left schoolyard politics back on the schoolyard.
Now, suddenly, it is very much in fashion to document what has been going on at FBCH/HAC for decades. Great! But all I can say is, what took you so long to appreciate that victims have value and dignity, even when they don’t get you on national television? Unless, of course, the victims of Jack Schaap are just another way to get on national television….

If you need an index of only FBCH/HAC-related cases, here it is. This is similar to what I provided for Darrell Dow of Stuff Fundies Like, except this list also includes proteges of Jack Hyles, and not just former HAC students. Please note that, unless otherwise stated, all of these people are pastors:
Andy Beith, Hyles-Anderson graduate, sentenced for sex with an 11 year old girl, previous arrest for contributing to the delinquency of a minor:
AV Ballenger, Former FBCH Deacon, convicted for molesting a child. Jack Hyles had the church give him a standing ovation and kept him in the bus ministry: http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=219
Charles Shifflett, Hyles protege and fanatical Hyles devotee, convicted for sexual indecency with children:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=127
Chester Mulligan, Hyles protege and fanatical Hyles devotee, accepted plea deal for felony stalking an underage girl, though the facts warranted more serious charges:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=211
Chris Settlemoir, Hyles-Anderson graduate, convicted for Criminal Sexual Conduct wth underage males, http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=51
Craig Sisson, Hyles-Anderson graduate, convicted of first degree child molestation: http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=126
Dave Hyles, Hyles-Anderson student, former FBCH staff member, former heir to the Hyles throne, never been convicted, but attached to numerous scandals, pleaded the fifth amendment when questioned about the death of Brent Stevens:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=168
David Joseph Jorgensen, Hyles-Anderson graduate: has successfully gotten his criminal record expunged in Chico CA, but still part of a civil lawsuit for “committing lewd acts” on a female when she was 14. Now on staff at First Baptist of Hammond:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=349
Earl Reeves , Hyles protege and fanatical Hyles devotee, took a guilty plea for molesting four adolescent girls from his church, Lighthouse Baptist Church in San Diego California:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=375
Evangeline Combs, former Hyles-Anderson staff member, now serving sentence for multiple counts of child abuse against the woman formerly known as Esther Combs:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=216
Greg Neal, Hyles-Anderson graduate, escaped charges of sexual misconduct by hiding evidence of his crime until the statute of limitations had run out:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=118
Jeffrey Jarrell, Hyles-Anderson graduate, took a guilty plea for molesting 11 girls from his church:
http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=220
Jeremiah Owen, former Hyles-Anderson student, convicted on various counts of burglary and sexual assault:
http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=129
Joe Combs, former faculty member at Hyles-Anderson College, now serving sentence for multiple counts of violent and sexual child abuse against the woman formerly known as Esther Combs:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=216
Kerry Martin, HAC/OBC former student, serving 205 Years for rape of a girl in his church: http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=209
Matt Jarrell, former Hyles-Anderson student, arrested on suspicion of rape and sodomy. Committed suicide in his jail cell as the investigation closed in on him: http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=89
Russell K Overla, Hyles-Anderson graduate, convicted for child molesting: http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=210
Ted Butler, Hyles-Anderson graduate, sentenced for Criminal Sexual Misconduct (two separate counties):http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=124
William Beith, Hyles-Anderson graduate, charged with solicitation for sex and for exposing himself in public:http://jeriwho.net/lillypad2/?cat=208

The Legacy of Jack Hyles

jack hylesMembers of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indianaand people closely associated withHyles-Anderson College and Jack Schaap are astonished at the firing of Jack Schaap for sexual misconduct with a minor. (see previous posts hereand here) Evidently these people have a short memory or live in denial because First Baptist Church has a long history of pastors getting themselves in trouble with the fairer sex.
Jack Schaap’s father-in-law, Jack Hyles, had an illicit sexual relationship with his secretary. The evidence against Hyles was overwhelming, yet the church rejected the evidence and Jack Hyles continued to pastor the church. (see Conservative Babylon’s section on Jack Hyles)
David Hyles, the son of Jack Hyles and youth pastor of the church, had numerous sexual relationships with women in the church. The church quietly sent him away to pastor another church, not telling the new church about his sexual proclivities, and he continued to have numerous sexual relationships with women in the new church. (see Conservative Babylon’s section on David Hyles)
Some people are praising the church for publicly exposing Jack Schaap’s “sin.” This is the same church that ignored Jack Hyles’ “sin”, covered over David Hyles’ “sin”, and whitewashed numerous other scandals in the Church and College, so forgive me if I don’t think they are acting “better” than the Catholic Church. (as one commenter said)
The people of First Baptist Church were taught that if they didn’t see something it didn’t happen. They were taught that unless an allegation could be confirmed by two or more people (Matthew 18) they were not to believe it. This kind of thinking resulted in a culture where “sin” was ignored or swept under the proverbial rug. (a rug that is so high now that you have to walk up a five foot hill to get into the church)
In general, the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (IFB) Church movement abhors scandal and they do everything they can to cover it up. More important than the sin or the victims is the church’s testimony. The church’s testimony must be protected at all costs, even if we ignore a pedophile in our midst, like Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida did. (see Conservative Babylon’s section on Bob Gray)
For First Baptist Church of Hammond to out Jack Schaap they had to have been backed into a corner without the option of covering it up or quietly making the “problem” go away. (calling in attorney David Gibbs to “manage” the crisis speaks volumes about depth of the scandal)
The root of the Jack Schaap scandal is found in the ministry, teaching, and doctrine of his predecessor, Jack Hyles. The remainder of this post will focus on Jack Hyles. It is impossible to understand the Jack Schaap story without first looking at Jack Hyles’ forty-two year ministry at First Baptist Church of Hammond. (a church that was an American Baptist Church until Hyles pulled it out of the Convention a few years after he arrived there in 1959)
In its heyday, First Baptist Church of Hammond was the largest church in the United States. (and, at times, claimed to be the largest church in the world) The Church was built around two things: the bus ministry and Jack Hyles.
The Church saw attendances exceeding 25,000 people. At the center of this huge church was its Pastor, Jack Hyles.
Jack Hyles BookletIn the late 1960’s and 1970’s Jack Hyles was, what many of us described, the pope of the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church movement. He authored numerous books with titles like Let’s Go Soulwinning, Let’s Build an Evangelistic Church, Enemies of Soulwinning, The Hyles Church Manual,How to Rear Infants, How to Rear Children, How to Rear Teenagers, Satan’s Bid for Your Child, Marriage is a Commitment, Woman the Completer, and Blue Denim and Lace.
There was a hard-fast rule in the IFB movement. The bigger the church attendance the more authority you were granted and the more weight your words had. I heard countless big- name IFB pastors say, “until you have as many eggs in your basket as I do you have no right to criticize me.” Pastors with small churches were looked down on and were expected to shut up and learn from the top dogs of the movement.
From 1976 to 1989, I heard Jack Hyles preach numerous times. I traveled to a number of Sword of the Lord Conferences, often taking people from the churches I pastored with me.
Hyles was a dynamic preacher, a real motivator. He used very little of the Bible in his preaching. His sermons were always topical or textual and were littered with personal stories and illustrations.
Hyles was a narcissist. Most of his stories and illustrations were about his own personal life and exploits. His stories about he and his mother are legendary.
Over time, as I became more and more dissatisfied with the IFB movement, I paid closer attention to the substance of Hyles’ sermons. In particular, I focused on the stories that Hyles told. I came to the conclusion that Hyles was a narcissistic liar.
Hyles would often talk about how important and busy he was. In several sermons he talked about how many people he counseled every week. I sat down and did the math and I concluded it was physically impossible for Hyles to have counseled as many people each week as he claimed.
Hyles was a ruthless man. I watched him, during Q and A times at a conference, dress down and belittle pastors for asking the “wrong” question. He refused to allow anyone to challenge his authority as the king of the IFB hill.
To understand the scandals at First Baptist Church in Hammond, we must understand the gospel that has been preached at First Baptist for over 50 years. It is the same gospel that is/was preached by men like Bob Gray of TexasBob Gray of JacksonvilleCurtis HutsonDennis Corle, and thousands of other IFB pastors.
Jack Hyles preached a bastardized version of the Christian gospel. The Hyles gospel has been labeled as decisional regeneration or one, two, three, repeat after me. I used to label the gospel of the IFB church movement as:
  • win them
  • wet them
  • work them
  • waste them
The only thing that mattered was winning souls. Dennis Corle told me one time that I should spend more time soulwinning and less time studying in preparation to preach on Sunday.
The key to church growth was to keep more people coming in the front door than were going out the back door. IFB churches are notorious for turning over their church memberships, especially when a pastor leaves and a new one comes in. (more on this later)
The Hyles gospel focused on praying the sinners prayer. Pray this prayer and you are saved. Good works? They were desired and even expected, but if a saved person never exhibited any change in their lives they were still considered saved.
If a pastor dared suggest that new life in Christ meant a change of conduct they were accused of preaching “works salvation.” (the Lordship Salvation controversy) According to the Hyles gospel, it was all about praying the prayer and once a person prayed the prayer they could NEVER,EVER be lost again. This is why some people insist that I am still saved even if I don’t want to be. Once God has you he never lets go of you. (check out RB Thieme’s teaching of this perverted gospel)
The Hyles gospel filled churches with people who had made a mental assent to a set of propositional facts. Every year churches like First Baptist Church in Hammond and Longview Baptist Temple report thousands of people being saved. Most of these new converts stop attending after a short while but this is of no consequence. They prayed the “prayer”…on to the next sinner in need of saving.
Hyles Ad
The IFB church movement is centered on men. Most IFB churches are pastored by one man who has complete, total control of the church. Most IFB churches are congregational in name only, with the pastor being the autocratic king of the church.
Jack Hyles, Jack Schaap, and countless other big-name IFB traveling preachers routinely promote the notion of pastoral authority. The pastor, under the authority of Jesus and powered by the Holy Spirit, is the final authority in the church. He is the hub around which everything turns.
IFB churches are not known for their name but for who their pastor is. IFB church members routinely say, when asked about what church they attend, I go to Pastor So-and So’s church.
Two years ago, in a post titled, The Cult of Personality, I wrote:
Churches aren’t known for what they believe or even the works they do. They are known for who their pastor is.
When asked where they go to Church a Christian will often say “I go to  Pastor Smith’s Church.”
The focus of everything is on the pastor. He is the mover and shaker. He is what powers the machine. Without him it all fails.
Christian TV, radio and publishing is all about the personalities within the Church. Name recognition is the name of the game.
Does anyone really believe Rod Parsley is a good writer? Yet, his books sell. Why? Name recognition.
Everything is focused on and culminates with the sermon and the preacher.
I had people drive 40 minutes to the Church I pastored in SE Ohio. They loved my preaching. They thought I was the greatest preacher since the last guy they thought was wonderful. Really? As much as I think that I am a pretty good public speaker, they had to drive past 40 Churches to get to the Church I pastored. Not one of those  Churches had a preacher that could preach competently? (well maybe not, after hearing more than a few preachers)
What happens when the pastor leaves the Church? What happens when the personalities change, when a new preacher takes over? Strife. Division. People leave the Church. Why? Because Church became about the preacher rather than about Jesus and serving others.
Why is it the pastor’s name is on everything? The sign out front. The bulletin . Every piece of literature the Church produces.
If it is really is all about Jesus then why does it matter if anyone knows the pastor’s name?
Ah, but it does matter. Most Christians are good capitalists. (serving a socialist Jesus) They are consumers first and Christians second.  They know people are “attracted” (the attractional method) to the Church by the pastor, the programs, the building, etc.
They know the pastor becomes the face of their Church. It shouldn’t be this way, but it is, and quite frankly, it is the Church itself that must bear the blame for this.
They revel in the cult of personality. They love having a name brand preacher. They watch Christians TV and listen to Christian radio because  Pastor/Rev/Dr/Evangelist/Bishop/Apostle so-and so is on. Take away the names and it becomes as interesting as eating a no-name hamburger at a no-name restaurant surrounded by no-name people.
Is it any wonder IFB pastors and churches have the scandals they do? Members are taught to obey their pastor without question. He is the man of God. If he is doing something wrong God will chastise him.
This kind of thinking allows IFB pastors to commit adultery, molest children, and steal from the church without anyone ever knowing about it. I could spend the next two days writing about IFB pastors who have abused their place of authority and committed heinous acts against the people they pastored.
IFB churches think they are above the world and other churches because of what they believe. They are Bible believers, and their pastors preach hard against sin. Because of this, they have a hard time believing that their pastor or any other noted preacher could ever commit sins like Jack Hyles, Jack Schaap, David Hyles, and Bob Gray did.
Bob Gray, pastor emeritus of Longview Baptist Temple had this to say on this blogabout the Schaap scandal:
May I present the practical side?  There exists more molestation cases proportionately reported in the 42,000 churches of the Southern Baptist Convention than in the 22,000 independent Baptist churches.  Consider the largest denomination in our nation, the Catholic Church, and then think on their sexual transgressions for a while.  This is not to take lightly one person who is violated by a leader in a church.
Look carefully at the argument Gray is making here. The Southern Baptists and the Catholics are worse than us! Praise Jesus! Such thinking should sicken all of us.
Here is what I know about the IFB movement. They will wail and moan for awhile but, in a few weeks or months, the scandal will pass, and they will go back to “winning souls” and “Preaching hard against sin.” It is only a matter of time before
a-n-o-t-h-e-r scandal rocks the IFB movement
Until the IFB movement repudiates its corruption of the Christian gospel and changes how their churches are governed there is no hope of meaningful change. Will they change? Not likely.
Change is not likely to come because of their literalism and belief in the inerrancy of the Bible. Armed with certainty, knowing they are right, they will continue to preach a corrupted gospel and allow narcissistic pastors to rule over them. It IS in the Bible…

Ichabod, The Glory Has Departed: Free Public Domain Books by Gregory L. Jackson – PDFs Linked on Dropbox. Lenski’s Commentaries Free. Luther’s Lenker Edition and the Gems Free in One PFD

Free Public Domain Books by Gregory L. Jackson – PDFs Linked on Dropbox.
Lenski’s Commentaries Free. Luther’s Lenker Edition and the Gems Free in One PFD

The only theologian who matches Luther and Melanchthon in Biblical exposition is Martin Chemnitz. All three men are neglected by the Lutheran leaders, who favor modernists, especially non-Lutheran modernists.

These books are linked on Dropbox, and the link should work whether the individual has Dropbox or not. Please report difficulties to greg.jackson.edlp@gmail.com. I suggest downloading the free Dropbox software and using it for backups and large file transfers. Various exercises will allow the user to increase the free storage – as I have – to almost 16 gigs. I only use 5.5 gigs at this time.

These books are public domain, so anyone can copy, share, use, translate, or edit without asking permission or paying a fee. Giving credit where due is the norm, and publishers normally cite where the original can be found. John N. Lenker’s Sermons of Martin Luther are a good example, where we give credit to Lenker, who gives credit to previous editions.

This was first a need for the African missions, so they can translate freely and use books as needed. Secondly, it is useful for those who want to use all or part of these books in the future.

If, at my death, my executors, or more properly my creditors, find any precious manuscripts in my desk, then here I prospectively ascribe all the honor and the glory to Church Growth and Universal Objective Justification; for Church Growth and UOJ were my Yale College and my Harvard. (paraphrased from Moby Dick, Chapter One, Herman Melville)

Jacobs, Krauth, and many more are deliberately forgotten by ELCA and ignored by the LCMS-WELS. These great authors can be found in the Lutheran Library Publishing Ministry.

Do not overlook the tremendous and growing collection of worthwhile, free Lutheran books in Alec Satin’s –

R. C. H. Lenski, taught Justification by Faith and the inerrancy of Scriptures, just as Dr. Walter A. Maier did in the LCMS. Lenski’s colleagues did their best to silence him and displace his faithful teaching.

This is the corrected and most recent LENSKI Dropbox link for  his books and the commentaries – PDFs.

Main page for Luther’s Works in French – MANY LANGUAGES!

Even more languages are linked here – probably the biggest set of Luther in various languages anywhere on the Net.

These were linked separately before. I am checking to make sure everything is in the one folder above. I think a few need to be added. Janie Sullivan put most of them together for us in DropBox.

Ichabod, The Glory Has Departed: The Faith of Jesus – Too Great an Obstacle for the Ft. Whiners. The Dastardly NIV Cannot Extirpate the Truth

The Faith of Jesus – Too Great an Obstacle for the Ft. Whiners.
The Dastardly NIV Cannot Extirpate the Truth

The Faith of Jesus, Amazon

KJV Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

δικαιοσυνη δε θεου δια πιστεως ιησου χριστου εις παντας και επι παντας τους πιστευοντας ου γαρ εστιν διαστολη

KJV Romans 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

I ran across this stumbling block for Objective Justification blockheads some time ago, saw a website and then an academic book – The Faith of Jesus – on this ignored topic.

This skandalon does not trigger unfaith but destroys Enthusiasm and nurtures faith.

This is their key argument, their only argument – “God pronounced the entire world forgiven, absolved, and saved” at some point in time (still to be resolved, like whether Mary was assumed into heaven before or after death).

As my Greek students know, an anarthrous phrase (without the article “the”) calls attention to itself. My best rendition in English is using the dash: Jesus-faith in this case, water-Spirit baptism in John 3.

This phrase is not an accident or typo – Paul used it in Galatians and Philippians. However, it is largely overlooked. Richard B. Hays studied at Yale Divinity, wrote his dissertation on the topic at Emory and taught at Yale, elevated to a named professorship at Duke. His book is highly regarded.

The advantage of Ft. Whiners is their lack of New Testament Greek and their reliance on theses independent of the Scriptures.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Liz Eaton – her incredible powers to shrink her synod and seminaries has caught on with LCMS-WELS-ELS. Lead on! with ambiguous genders and unambiguous dogma.

But their little fad will join the rest of the Ringwraiths as their rush to save the One Ring that rules them all. Note who controls it now.

This verse is central to Justification by Faith and destroys all attempts to claim anyone is justified or declared righteous without faith. Please note that their seldom-mentioned Subjective Justification is just as much opposed to faith as OJ is. Why? Because SJ only means “agreement, even making a decision for Justification without Faith.”

To paraphrase Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who knew more Greek than all the Ft. Whiners put together – Jesus graciously gives His faith to believers in justification.

“Thus we see that even our faith is not ours in its origin: but is the faith of the Son of God graciously communicated to us.” Samuel Taylor Coleridge

(cited in Hays, The Faith of Jesus, page li)

This also explains “from faith to faith” (Romans 1:17) -which has puzzled New Testament expositors.

The faith of Jesus emphasizes His human nature. Knowing the torture and humiliation ahead of Him, the desertion of the disciples, the jeers of the opponents, Jesus’ faith led Him forward to complete the will of His Heavenly Father. As my mother reminded me decades ago, He prayed “Take this cup from Me. But not My will, but Thine.”

Hays, The Faith of Jesus

Contrast the faith of Jesus with the hideous dogma revealed in the following books, adored by Missouri, WELS, and ELS alike.
